Sports marketing was my first love. You tapped into the emotion of a moment; you connected with fans through the experience. At the time, I didn’t see how that hot summer with the New York Jets or the long homestands, which bled into the weekdays with the Durham Bulls, could lead to tech. They brought me here.
I’m Nicola Mattis, founder and CMO of Brand Engineer Studios, a brand company, where we transform talented Black STEM professionals into powerhouses for their dream roles. We collaborate with professionals to create an authentic brand voice and articulate their value. Creating an authentic brand opens doors to leadership and amazing career opportunities. We ignite one’s kinetic energy because being who you are is how you win. You have no choice but to use your voice when we’re done.
With over 15 years of marketing experience, I’ve led fun, dynamic and clever brand marketing campaigns for brands like Travelocity, Ecolab, TiVo and Udacity. In the last 10 years, I have made tech my career home and continue to live in it. I have captivated audiences and delivered hundreds of millions of impressions and strong sales. I've worked with some amazing marketers, engineers, scrum masters and more.
I graduated from Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in Public Policy Studies and African and African-American Studies. Later, I obtained an MBA from Wake Forest University with a Brand Management concentration.
In my career, one of the most significant challenges was seeing a scarcity of Black STEM professionals in leadership roles and under-valued talent in Silicon Valley. I saw where I could affect change. While transforming lives through technology education at Udacity, I realized that I had a chance to build something that could shine the spotlight on talented Black STEM professionals, thereby changing their growth trajectory in the digital transformation. In sports marketing, I had developed the discipline to account for the highs and lows on the emotional spectrum, which prepared me to manage this wave of change.
Brand Engineer Studios started in California, but now, serves nationwide. Currently, we are headquartered in Maryland and exploring the DMV as the Washington, D.C-Maryland-Virginia area is charmingly called.
Developed the "Imagine If..." theme for Intel, which dictated social messaging, trippling applications for our Udacity Scholarship program
